BUSINESS ESSENTIALS
Overview
By participating in the Business Essentials Program, you will gain not only a chance to work in
Vancouver, one of Canada’s most dynamic cities, but you will also learn strategic hospitality
and/or business management skills, and strengthen your English level academically and
professionally.
This course is designed to increase your familiarity with marketing, presentations, public
speaking, business communication, resumes and job interviews in North America. Having a
higher-level qualification from a Canadian-recognized college, along with a relevant work
experience, will allow you to become more confident, thrive in your career, and succeed in the
workplace. The program emphasizes learning by doing, and therefore students are regularly
required to work on actual projects. Students are exposed to an environment that encourages
two-way interaction between students and instructors.
The program is divided equally into two components: for the first 50% of the program you will
study, and in the next 50% of the program you will gain relevant work experience. Programs are
12 or 24 months in length. In addition, you may also work part time while studying for the entire
duration of your program. This will enable you to earn money to support your stay in Canada.

Program Terms
The Business Essentials Program includes a period of in-class study at a top Vancouver college,
and following this, you will start a period of work experience. Stepwest will guarantee a job in
the Hospitality or Customer Service Industry, ideal to develop and perfect your practical skills.

During the first component of the program, you will be studying at a college. Their campus is
located downtown Vancouver and in the heart of the trendy Gastown district, one of Vancouver’s
most culturally diverse and historical neighborhoods. They offer a great learning environment,
featuring small class sizes, and highly-qualified instructors with years of experience in the
industry.
They are accredited by the Private Career Training Institutions Agency of British Columbia
(PCTIA) and a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) authorized to receive international students
in programs that require a study and work permit.
Co-op Work Experience Term
After completing the in-class study term of the program, you will spend the remaining half in a
practical work environment under the supervision of our placement coordinators. This is a unique
opportunity for you to acquire business skills and practice your English in real-life situations. You
will get a guaranteed paid position through a casual job in the Hospitality Service Industry. We
cannot guarantee paid professional internship opportunities. Six weeks prior to the start of your
co-op internship, one of our coordinators will ask you to come to our office to begin your
placement process.
Off campus Work
You are allowed to work during the whole duration of the program, using your study permit. This
is a great way to earn money to pay off your living expenses (rent, food etc.). You can work up to
20 hours per week during regular in-class study period, and full time during scheduled breaks
and holidays (i.e. spring break).
Most students find entry-level job positions in the service and hospitality industry such as: waiter,
hostess, busser, barista, cook, room attendant, store clerk, cashier, room attendant, or food
counter clerk. These positions usually have flexible schedules and minimum wage in the province
of British Columbia is $10.85/hour. Stepwest will not provide this part-time job while study to the
student.
Programs Available
12 Months (6 months study & work + 6 months work experience only)
In 12 months you will build your knowledge and skills in Management, Business Communication
and Economics.

24 Months (12 months study & work + 12 months work experience only)
In 2 years program you will build your knowledge and skills in Management, Business
Communication and Economics getting a Honours Co-op Diploma in Business Management
with Specialization!
Courses include all classes from the above 12 months program plus: Strategic Management,
Canadian Business Law, Essentials of Marketing, Organizational Behavior, Financial Management

Who should take this program?
Young or university graduates in business or fields outside of business who want to have
international experience in their resume. This program would benefit the careers of people who
are:
• Early career professionals wanting to develop foundational business administration skills
• Pursuing a career in an international environment abroad or in their home country
• International students interested in studying business administration or management
functions from a Canadian perspective, while working to pay their expenses.
Upon completion of the Business Essentials program you will:
• Apply business knowledge and skills to enhance performance as an employee and to
contribute to the management of an enterprise.

skills through your work experience, getting a network of professional contacts in
Canada!
Locations
College campus is located in downtown Vancouver and in the heart of trendy Gastown district,

Eligibility & Visa
• Intermediate English Level: TOEFL 510, IELTS 5 or equivalent*
• Be eligible for a Canadian Study and Co-op work permit (valid passport)
• Copy of highest diploma/degree (min. High School)
• At least 19 years old.
Process
1. Application – Candidate will send:
1. Application form completed and signed
2. Copy of candidate’s passport
3. Last Certificate of completed Studies in their home country. (Min. High School).
4. Skype ID
2. English Level Assessment – In order to participate in this program the candidate
must have an intermediate English level, so an exam will need to be completed. Skype
Admittance Consultation might be required.
3. Program Registration – To confirm registration, the student needs to pay 50% of
the program as a deposit to start visa process (including CAD 350 non refundable
Registration Fee).
4. Letter of Acceptance Documents – Stepwest will provide the student with the
Letter of Acceptance (LOA) documents.
5. Visa Application – Stepwest will then assist the candidate in applying for the visa (if
required) and study permit with general information. We cannot guarantee the visa of
the participant. Visa Fees must be paid by the student (not included in the program fee).
6. Final Payment – Once study permit and visa are granted, student will need to pay
remaining fee to Stepwest. Full payment of the program must be done before arrival to
Canada.
7. Arrival – Candidate arrives in Canada and attends orientation at Stepwest, and starts
the in-class study portion of the program (Stepwest will not provide this job). Candidate
can begin to work off-campus to support himself/herself financially.
8. Placement Process – 6 weeks prior to the co-op internship start date, Stepwest will
begin the placement process. A Stepwest placement coordinator will revise the resume,
conduct interview preparation, arrange your work experience interview(s), confirm job
placement and monitor on a monthly basis the candidate until the completion of the
program. Once the student graduates SHOULD NOT keep on working, as the purpose
of the study and work permit have been completed. If the student keep on working after
graduation is under his/her responsibility.

COLLEGE & INTERNSHIP
Higher level education at a top Canadian college followed by a workexperience in the Hospitality Industry!
Overview
Obtain specialized qualifications at a top Vancouver college and then further your skills with
professional work experience in a related sector. You can study for 6 month, 1 year or 2 years in
disciplines such as Hospitality Management. The program is divided equally into two
components: 50% study & work, and 50% just co-op work experience.
The program is instructed by industry professionals, and certified by the internationally
recognized American Hotel and Lodging Association (AH&LA). In class, you will build a solid
foundation in managerial skills and acquire key concepts and techniques related to hotel and
restaurant operations, such as sales, marketing, accounting and more.
Given the hands-on nature of the hospitality industry, the program includes a paid internship,
which will allow you to gain practical work experience, develop your professional network, and
create future career development opportunities.
You can also work part-time during the study part of your program, which will enable you to earn
money to support your studies. Having a higher level qualification from a recognized Canadian
College along with a related work experience will allow you to gain an insight into North
American business cultures and better develop your career.

college, followed by a period of paid co-op, ideal to practice and develop your practical skills.

In-class Study Term
During the first component of the program, you will be studying at one of Vancouver ‘s top
colleges. Their campus is located right in the middle of downtown, closed to the neighborhood
of Gastown and also only 1 block from our office. They offer a great learning environment,
featuring small class sizes, which is perfect to get the right amount of support from your teacher.
They are accredited by the Private Career Training Institutions Agency of British Columbia
(PCTIA) and received the Education Quality Assurance (EQA) designation, which is the provincial
brand of quality for post secondary education.
Co-op Internship Term
6 weeks prior to the start of your co-op internship, one of our coordinators will ask you to come
to our office to begin the unpaid internship placement process. Stepwest will guarantee your
paid work experience in the Hospitality industry.
Our coordinator will revise your resume to North American standards, prepare you for the
internship interview with one on one meeting(s), schedule the work experience interview(s),
confirm your job placement and monitor you until the end of your program. We ensure that you
will get the most out of your internship to allow you to put your studies to practical use.
Part-time Work
You are allowed to work during the whole duration of the program, using your study permit. This

6 Months Essentials – Tourism & Hospitality / Food, Beverage & Service
(3 months study & work + 3 months paid Hospitality work experience)
Great introduction to the world of Hospitality, Tourism & Customer Service in Canada. Three
months of study will give students an understanding of the operations required to maintain the
success of a business in the hospitality industry. Once the study term is completed, a three
month co-op will provide you with valuable work experience within the field.
1 year Diploma – Hospitality Management
(6 months study & work + 6 months paid Hospitality work experience)
This specialization is designed to equip graduates with both applied and theoretical Hotel and
Tourism management skills necessary to compete successfully in a highly competitive global
environment.
2 years Honours Co-op Diploma in Business Management with specialization in Hospitality
(12 months study & work + 12 months paid Hospitality work experience)
Courses include all classes from the above 1 year programs plus: Business English, Leadership,
Accounting 1,2,3, Economics (Micro and Macro), Social Media Marketing & MS Office Suite,
along with elective courses like: Managing Service in Food and Beverage Operations, Managing
Front Office Operations, Supervision in the Hospitality Industry, Managing Housekeeping
Operations, Convention Management, International Hotel Management & more!
